How to cancel Amazon Prime

Quick answer

  1. Go to amazon.com/mm/pipeline/cancellation and sign in.
  2. Follow the prompts. Keep choosing the option that ends your membership.
  3. Check any end date or refund Amazon shows, then confirm.

Prime stays active until the end of the period you paid for, unless you choose to give up your benefits for a refund. Amazon's terms promise a refund within 3 business days of joining or of a trial turning paid, or if nobody on your account used Prime since the last charge. Otherwise, check what the cancel page offers. If Google Play or another company bills you, cancel with them instead.

First, find out who bills you

The device you use doesn't decide how you cancel. The company that charges you does.

Fastest check: Sign in to Your Memberships and Subscriptions. Prime is listed there with its renewal date and price, and Manage Subscription shows the payment method. If you joined in the Amazon app on Android, also check your Google Play subscriptions.

Cancel on the Amazon website

Recommended

This works in any browser, on a computer or on your phone.

  1. Open amazon.com/mm/pipeline/cancellation and sign in to the account that has Prime.
  2. Follow the prompts. If Amazon shows your benefits or other options first, keep choosing the option that ends your membership.
  3. Before you confirm, check any end date or refund Amazon shows.
  4. Confirm the cancellation and keep a screenshot of the confirmation.

Done when: Amazon confirms the cancellation, and Prime no longer shows a renewal date in Your Memberships and Subscriptions.

  • You can also start from Prime Central: under Manage Membership, select End Membership.
  • On Prime for Young Adults, Amazon's steps are End Membership, then End My Benefits, then End Membership again.
  • If Google Play or another company bills you for Prime, cancel with them instead. Their steps are below.

Cancel in the Amazon Shopping app

Use the Amazon Shopping app on your phone or tablet.

  1. Open the Amazon Shopping app and tap the profile icon at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Scroll down and tap Manage Prime Membership.
  3. Tap Manage Membership to open the menu, tap Manage Membership again, then tap End Membership.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish cancelling.

Done when: Amazon confirms the cancellation, and Prime no longer shows a renewal date in Your Memberships and Subscriptions.

  • Can't find these labels? Open amazon.com/mm/pipeline/cancellation in your phone's browser instead.
  • Joined Prime in the Amazon app on Android? Google Play may bill you. Use the Google Play steps below.

Cancel through Amazon Customer Service

If the cancel page doesn't work for you, Amazon points you to Customer Service, which helps by chat and by phone.

  1. Open Amazon Customer Service and sign in.
  2. Under Can't find what you're looking for?, select Something else.
  3. Select I need help with something else, then pick how you want to contact Amazon.
  4. Say: "I want to cancel my Amazon Prime membership. Please confirm the end date and any refund."
  5. Save the chat transcript, or write down the date and the agent's name.

Done when: The agent confirms the cancellation, and Prime no longer shows a renewal date in Your Memberships and Subscriptions.

  • Amazon says its Customer Service help is available 24/7.

Billed by Google Play

If you joined Prime in the Amazon app on an Android phone, Google Play may bill you. Amazon says to cancel those memberships in Google Play.

  1. Open the Play Store and tap your profile icon.
  2. Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  3. Tap Amazon Prime.
  4. Tap Cancel subscription.

Done when: Google Play shows the date the subscription ends.

Billed by Apple

Amazon's US help pages don't list Apple as a way to pay for Prime. If Apple bills you for something in the Prime Video app, such as Ad free or an add-on subscription, cancel that with Apple.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open your Apple subscriptions.
  2. Tap the Prime Video subscription you want to end.
  3. Tap Cancel Subscription.

Done when: The Prime Video subscription in your Apple subscriptions shows an end date instead of a renewal date.

  • The same link works on a Mac, where it opens your subscriptions in the App Store.
  • No Cancel Subscription button means it's already cancelled.
  • Amazon says to cancel an Apple-billed add-on at least 24 hours before it renews, or you may be charged again.
  • This doesn't end Prime itself. Use the website steps for that.

Billed by another company

If Prime came with another company's service, such as a phone or internet plan, Amazon says to cancel with that company.

  1. Find the company that includes Prime on your bill or in your account with them.
  2. Contact that company and ask them to remove Amazon Prime from your plan.
  3. Ask for the date Prime ends and keep their confirmation.

Done when: The company confirms the change and its bill no longer lists Amazon Prime.

  • In the US, Spectrum includes Prime at no extra cost with Spectrum Internet Assist, its internet plan for low-income customers. If your Prime comes with it, contact Spectrum to cancel your Prime.
  • That company's billing terms and refund rules apply, not Amazon's.

Amazon Family and shared Prime

A Prime member can share some Prime benefits with one other adult, and with teens and children, in the same household through Amazon Family. The membership belongs to the Prime member, so only they can cancel it. The people they share with get those benefits through that membership, so tell them before you cancel.

To stop sharing without cancelling, go to Manage Your Amazon Family, select the member and choose to remove them from your Amazon Family.

If you use someone else's Prime through Amazon Family, you can't cancel it. You can leave their Amazon Family, but you then have to wait 12 months before joining a different one.

Pause instead of cancelling

On an eligible Prime Monthly or Prime Annual plan, you can pause from the Membership Management section of Prime Central. The pause starts after your current billing period. You aren't charged and can't use Prime benefits while it lasts.

Monthly plans can pause for one month and then resume on their own. Monthly and annual plans can also pause for up to a year and resume whenever you choose, at the price that applies then. After 365 days in a row on pause, Amazon cancels the membership.

Subscriptions tied to Prime end when the pause starts. Your Amazon Photos stay where they were.

You can't pause if you joined through another company, or if you have Prime Video only, Prime Business, a student membership, a free trial or discounted offer, or the Prime Shipping plan.

Free trial

New members can try Prime free for 30 days, and Amazon needs a valid credit card to start the trial. When it ends, Amazon moves you to a paid plan and charges you automatically. Cancel before the trial ends to avoid the first charge.

If you miss the date, cancel within 3 business days of the trial turning paid. Amazon then refunds the fee, but it may keep back the value of Prime benefits used in those days.

Prime for Young Adults starts with a 6-month trial. If you cancel and rejoin later, you won't get that trial again: Amazon offers the monthly plan ($7.49) or the annual plan ($69) instead.

Started the trial in the Amazon app on Android? Cancel it in Google Play.

What Amazon shows you before you leave

Amazon doesn't publish a discount for people who cancel. Its cancel flow can have more than one screen: for Prime for Young Adults, Amazon's own steps are End Membership, then End My Benefits, then End Membership again. Keep choosing the option that ends your membership until Amazon confirms the cancellation.

Under its 2025 settlement with the FTC, Amazon has to offer an easy way to cancel Prime, using the same method you used to sign up.

What happens after you cancel

  • Access: Prime stays active until the end of the period you already paid for, unless you take a refund and give up your benefits. On a monthly plan, Prime Central shows that date under Next Payment.
  • Add-on subscriptions: Amazon's help pages disagree on whether Prime Video add-on subscriptions, such as Paramount+, keep renewing after Prime ends. After you cancel, open Your Memberships and Subscriptions and end any you don't want.
  • Amazon Photos: You keep 5 GB of free storage. If your photos and videos take up more, you can still view and download them but can't upload. After 180 days over the limit, Amazon deletes files, newest uploads first, until you're under it. It notifies you before deleting.
  • Rejoining: Sign up again at amazon.com/amazonprime. You get a free trial only if Amazon offers you one.

How to check it worked

  1. Open Your Memberships and Subscriptions and check that Prime no longer shows a renewal date.
  2. In the same list, check your Prime Video add-ons and other subscriptions, and cancel any you don't want.
  3. If Google Play billed you, check that your Google Play subscriptions show an end date.
  4. On your next card statement, or in Your Transactions, check that there's no new Prime charge, such as AMAZON PRIME* or AMZ*Prime.

Getting a refund

  • Within 3 business days: If you cancel within 3 business days of joining or of a free trial turning paid, Amazon refunds the fee. It may keep back the value of Prime benefits you and your account used in that time.
  • Later: At any other time, Amazon's Prime Terms promise a full refund only if nobody on your account made eligible purchases or used Prime benefits since the last charge. Another Amazon help page says that if you cancel and give up your benefits, Amazon refunds part of the fee, based on the full months left. You then lose Prime for the rest of the period you paid for, so check what the cancel page offers before you confirm.
  • Timing: Amazon says a Prime refund takes 3 to 5 business days to process.
  • FTC settlement: Under Amazon's FTC settlement, some US members get automatic payments through April 2027: those who joined through certain sign-up pages, or tried and failed to cancel online, between June 23, 2019 and June 23, 2025, and used no more than 20 Prime benefits in any 12 months. There's no claim to file, and payments expire 60 days after they're issued. Details: ftc.gov/enforcement/refunds/amazon-refunds.
  • Billed by Google Play: Within 48 hours of a purchase, you may be able to request a refund on Google Play. After that, Google says to contact the developer, Amazon.
  • Billed by another company: That company's refund policy applies.
  • Billed by Apple: Request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com. Apple decides, not Amazon.

If you were billed through the App Store, Apple decides eligibility case by case. Refund rules differ by country and by provider.

Questions people ask

Can I cancel Amazon Prime in the app?

Yes. In the Amazon Shopping app, tap the profile icon, then Manage Prime Membership. Tap Manage Membership to open the menu, tap Manage Membership again, then tap End Membership. If you joined in the app on Android and Google Play bills you, cancel in Google Play instead.

Will I get money back?

In some cases. Amazon's terms promise a refund if you cancel within 3 business days of joining or of your trial turning paid, minus the value of benefits used, or if nobody on your account used Prime since the last charge. Another Amazon help page says that if you cancel and give up your benefits, Amazon refunds part of the fee, based on the full months left. You then lose Prime for the rest of the period you paid for, so check what the cancel page offers before you confirm.

Does cancelling Prime cancel my Prime Video add-ons?

Amazon's help pages don't agree. After you cancel, check Your Memberships and Subscriptions and end any add-on you don't want to keep paying for.

Can I pause Prime instead?

On an eligible monthly or annual plan, yes, for up to a year, from Prime Central. Free trials, student memberships, Prime Video only and memberships through another company can't be paused.

What happens to my photos?

You keep 5 GB of free storage. If you store more, you can still download everything, but after 180 days over the limit Amazon starts deleting files, newest first. It notifies you before it deletes anything.

I only pay for Prime Video. How do I cancel that?

Prime Video on its own is a separate membership. Cancel it in Your Memberships and Subscriptions.

Am I owed money from the FTC settlement?

Possibly, if you're a US member who joined through certain Amazon sign-up pages, or couldn't cancel online, between June 23, 2019 and June 23, 2025, and used no more than 20 Prime benefits in any 12 months. Payments are automatic, so there's nothing to file. See the FTC's refund page.
