How to cancel Experian

Quick answer

  1. Open experian.com/help and find How to cancel my membership.
  2. Select Sign in to update now and sign in. Experian opens your membership settings.
  3. Select the free membership and follow the prompts.

Paid features stay on until your billing period ends, then your account becomes a free membership. Monthly 3-bureau plans aren't refunded for the rest of the billing period, unless your offer had a money-back guarantee. If Apple or Google Play bills you, cancel with them instead.

First, find out who bills you

The device you use doesn't decide how you cancel. The company that charges you does.

Fastest check: Search your email for an Apple or Google Play receipt that lists Experian. If you find neither, Experian bills you directly, and your membership settings at experian.com show your plan.

Recommended

Experian cancels a paid plan by switching it to the free membership, which has no monthly cost. This works in any browser.

  1. Open experian.com/help and find How to cancel my membership under Frequently asked questions.
  2. Select Sign in to update now.
  3. Sign in. Experian takes you to your membership settings.
  4. Select the free membership and follow the prompts.
  5. Take a screenshot of the page that shows your new plan.

Done when: Your membership settings show the free membership, or the date your paid plan ends.

  • Switching to free doesn't close your Experian account. You keep your Experian credit report and FICO Score, credit monitoring alerts and online disputes.
  • If Apple or Google Play bills you, changing your plan here doesn't stop their charges. Use the Apple or Google Play steps below.

Cancel on iPhone, iPad or Android

If Experian bills you directly, cancel in your phone's browser. If you paid in the Experian app through Apple or Google Play, skip to those sections.

  1. Open Safari or Chrome on your phone.
  2. Go to experian.com/help and select Sign in to update now under How to cancel my membership.
  3. Sign in, select the free membership and follow the prompts.

Done when: Your membership settings show the free membership, or the date your paid plan ends.

  • Deleting the Experian app doesn't cancel a paid plan.

Billed by Apple

If you started a paid plan in the Experian app on an iPhone or iPad and paid through Apple, cancel with Apple. Experian's terms say these memberships must be cancelled through Apple.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open your Apple subscriptions.
  2. Tap Experian.
  3. Tap Cancel Subscription.

Done when: Experian in your Apple subscriptions shows an end date instead of a renewal date.

  • The same link works on a Mac, where it opens your subscriptions in the App Store.
  • No Cancel Subscription button means it's already cancelled.
  • Experian not in the list? Check the receipt email to see which Apple Account paid. If a family member's account paid, only they can cancel it.
  • Experian's terms say the cancellation takes effect at the end of your current monthly billing period, and you keep access until then.
  • On a free trial, cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends, or Apple may charge you for the first month.
  • Having trouble? Experian's terms say Customer Care at 1-855-962-6943 can help you cancel with Apple.

Billed by Google Play

If you started a paid plan in the Experian app on Android and Google Play bills you, cancel in Google Play.

  1. Open the Play Store and tap your profile icon.
  2. Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  3. Tap Experian.
  4. Tap Cancel subscription.

Done when: Google Play shows the date the subscription ends.

  • On a computer, open play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions and sign in with the Google account that paid.
  • Uninstalling the Experian app doesn't cancel the subscription.
  • Having trouble? Experian's terms say Customer Care at 1-855-962-6943 can help you cancel with Google Play.

Cancel by phone

Experian's help page says you can also change your membership by calling membership support.

  1. Call Experian membership support at 1-866-617-1894, Monday to Friday, 8 am to 8 pm, or Saturday and Sunday, 8 am to 6 pm Central Time.
  2. Say: "I want to cancel my paid Experian membership. Please give me a confirmation number."
  3. Ask for the date your paid features end.
  4. Write down the date, the agent's name and any confirmation number.

Done when: Your membership settings show the free membership or the date your paid plan ends.

  • If you only want to ask a question first, Experian offers chat with EVA, its virtual assistant, around the clock after you sign in.
  • Experian's Terms of Use Agreement also lists Customer Care at 1-855-962-6943.
  • Experian lists this mailing address for membership questions: experian.com, Attn. Customer Care, PO Box 2390, Allen, TX 75013.

Family plans

A family plan covers the primary account holder, one more adult and up to 10 children. The primary account holder pays for it, so they're the one who changes or cancels it.

Experian's terms say removing every other adult and child doesn't lower the bill. The family price keeps renewing until the primary account holder switches to an individual plan or the free membership.

Free trial

Some paid plans start with a 7-day free trial, and you need a credit card to start it. Your offer states the trial length: Experian's terms also allow 30-day trials. Experian says you can cancel within the trial without paying the membership fee. If you don't, the plan's fee starts. Its terms say it places a $1 authorization on your card, and some offers charge a non-refundable $1 fee for your credit report.

Experian's terms say a trial started in the Experian app through Apple or Google Play also runs 7 days from your order, and you cancel it with Apple or Google Play. If Apple bills you, cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends, or Apple may charge you for the first month.

If you've had an Experian trial before, Experian's terms say it may not give you another one and may bill you right away when you rejoin.

Before you switch to free

Experian CreditLock is a paid feature. If your Experian credit file is locked when you cancel, Experian says it unlocks at the end of your billing period.

A security freeze is free and stays on until you lift it. You can place one at experian.com/help/credit-freeze. A freeze at Experian doesn't cover Equifax or TransUnion: you contact each one separately.

If you have an Experian Smart Money savings account, Experian says changing your membership can change its interest rate and features.

Fraud resolution help and identity theft insurance come only with paid plans. Experian's terms say that once you cancel, it no longer has to help with fraud resolution or identity restoration. If you're in the middle of a case, finish it before you switch.

What happens after you cancel

  • Access: Paid features stay on until the end of the billing period you already paid for. Then your account becomes a free membership.
  • Free account: You keep your Experian credit report and FICO Score, updated daily when you sign in, plus Experian credit monitoring alerts and online disputes.
  • Your data: Cancelling a paid plan doesn't close your account. Experian's terms say that to close it completely, you deactivate it in your online account if that option is offered, or contact Customer Care and ask them to deactivate it.
  • Rejoining: Sign in and choose a paid plan again. Experian says you can upgrade at any time.

How to check it worked

  1. Sign in at experian.com and check that your membership settings show the free membership or the date your paid plan ends.
  2. If Apple or Google Play billed you, check that Experian shows an end date in your subscriptions there.
  3. Check your next card statement for a new Experian charge after the end date.

Getting a refund

  • Billed by Experian, monthly: Experian's terms say a monthly plan with 3-bureau credit monitoring ends at the end of your current billing period, with no prorated refund for the rest of it. Experian doesn't publish a refund rule for its other plans. Ask membership support at 1-866-617-1894.
  • Billed by Experian, yearly: Experian's terms allow a prorated refund on yearly plans with 3-bureau credit monitoring if you cancel within 180 days of the yearly charge. Ask membership support at 1-866-617-1894.
  • Money-back offers: If your offer included a money-back guarantee, Experian's terms give a full refund when you cancel within the period your offer states.
  • Billed by Apple: Request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com. Apple decides, not Experian.
  • Billed by Google Play: Within 48 hours of a purchase, you may be able to request a refund on Google Play. After that, Google says to contact the developer, Experian. Experian's terms say it doesn't refund memberships bought through Google Play.

If you were billed through the App Store, Apple decides eligibility case by case. Refund rules differ by country and by provider.

Questions people ask

Is switching to the free membership the same as cancelling?

Yes. Experian cancels a paid plan by moving you to the free membership, which has no monthly cost. Your account stays open with the free features.

Will my Experian credit file be unlocked?

Yes, if you used CreditLock. Experian says a locked file unlocks at the end of your billing period. A security freeze is free if you want to keep new credit blocked.

Will I get money back for the rest of the month?

Usually not. Experian's terms say a monthly plan with 3-bureau credit monitoring runs to the end of your billing period and isn't prorated. If your offer included a money-back guarantee and you cancel within its period, the terms give a full refund.

I signed up in the Experian app. Why can't I cancel on the website?

If Apple or Google Play bills you, Experian's terms say you cancel through them. Use your Apple subscriptions or Google Play subscriptions.

How do I close my Experian account completely?

Switching to free keeps the account open. Experian's terms say you deactivate it in your online account if that option is offered, or contact Customer Care and ask them to deactivate it.

Can I switch to a cheaper paid plan instead?

Yes. Experian's plans page says you can change your plan at any time. Where a switch between paid plans is offered, Experian's terms say your current billing cycle ends and the unused days of the old plan are refunded to the card you paid with.
