Fee warning
Cancel at least 48 hours before your renewal date. AOL's terms say a subscription renews unless you cancel by then. Premium subscriptions bill separately, so cancelling your AOL plan doesn't stop them.
First, find out who bills you
The device you use doesn't decide how you cancel. The company that charges you does.
Fastest check: Sign in at mysubscriptions.aol.com. It lists what AOL bills you for directly. If you subscribed inside the AOL app, check the receipt: Apple or Google Play bills those purchases.
| What you see | Who bills you | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| An AOL charge on your credit card, debit card or PayPal | AOL | Cancel on the AOL website |
| A charge from AOL Fulfillment Services for a premium subscription such as McAfee or LifeLock | AOL | Cancel on the AOL website |
| You paid with Apple Pay on an AOL checkout page, and there's no receipt from Apple | AOL | Cancel on the AOL website |
| A charge from APPLE.COM/BILL, with an Apple receipt for AOL Mail Plus, AOL Plus or an AOL Security Bundle | Apple | Billed by Apple |
| An AOL charge on a Google Play receipt | Google Play | Billed by Google Play |
| A yearly charge from McAfee for McAfee Internet Security bought through an AOL offer | McAfee | Billed by McAfee |
| You use an additional username on someone else's AOL account | The account's Primary username | Primary and additional usernames |
Cancel on the AOL website
This works in any browser, on a computer or a phone. Cancel premium subscriptions first, then your AOL plan.
- Open mysubscriptions.aol.com and sign in.
- For each premium subscription, select Manage next to it, then Cancel or Cancel my subscription. Pick a reason if asked, then select the final cancel button. Depending on the product, it's Cancel My Billing, Cancel my subscription or a cancel link at the bottom of the page.
- For your AOL plan, select Manage next to it, then Cancel my subscription.
- Select Continue to cancel.
- Pick a reason from the menu if you want to (it's optional), then select Cancel now.
Done when: AOL emails you a cancellation confirmation, and MySubscriptions no longer shows anything you meant to stop as active.
- Cancelling your paid plan moves you to free AOL. You keep your AOL email and can still sign in to AOL sites.
- No receipt from Apple? Apple says you might have bought the subscription from another company. If you paid with Apple Pay on an AOL checkout page, that company is AOL, so cancel here.
- For some add-ons, AOL says the cancellation can take a few hours to finish.
Billed by Apple
If you subscribed in the AOL app on an iPhone or iPad, for example to AOL Mail Plus, Apple bills you and you cancel with Apple.
- On your iPhone or iPad, open your Apple subscriptions.
- Tap the AOL subscription.
- Tap Cancel Subscription.
Done when: The AOL subscription in your Apple subscriptions shows an end date instead of a renewal date.
- The same link works on a Mac, where it opens your subscriptions in the App Store.
- No Cancel Subscription button means it's already cancelled.
- In the AOL app you can also tap the Profile icon, then AOL Mail Plus, Manage subscription and Manage subscription on Appstore.
- AOL plans bought on aol.com don't appear here. Cancel those on the AOL website.
Billed by Google Play
If you subscribed in the AOL app on Android, for example to AOL Mail Plus, Google Play bills you and you cancel there.
- Open the Play Store and tap your profile icon.
- Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Tap the AOL subscription.
- Tap Cancel subscription.
Done when: Google Play shows the date the subscription ends.
- On a computer, open play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions and sign in with the Google account that paid.
- In the AOL app you can also tap the Profile icon, then AOL Mail Plus, Manage subscription and Manage subscription on Google Play.
- Uninstalling the AOL app doesn't cancel the subscription.
Billed by McAfee
If you bought McAfee Internet Security from McAfee through an AOL offer and pay a yearly fee, McAfee bills you and you cancel with McAfee.
- Call McAfee at 1-866-622-3911, every day, 9 am to 9 pm Eastern Time.
- Say: "I want to cancel my McAfee Internet Security subscription. Please give me a confirmation number."
- Write down the date, the agent's name and the confirmation number.
Done when: McAfee confirms the subscription is cancelled and gives you a confirmation number.
- AOL says McAfee also handles billing and refund questions for this purchase.
- McAfee Internet Security bought from AOL with a monthly fee is an AOL premium subscription. Cancel it on the AOL website.
Cancel by phone or chat
AOL says you can cancel through its call center as well as online.
- Call AOL Account Support at 1-800-827-6364, Monday to Friday, 8 am to midnight, and Saturday, 8 am to 10 pm Eastern Time. For paid members, AOL lists Sunday, 8 am to 10 pm Eastern Time, too.
- Or sign in, open help.aol.com/contact and select Chat Now. The chat option appears only if your account is eligible.
- Say: "I want to cancel my paid AOL plan and every premium subscription on my account. Please give me a confirmation number."
- Write down the date, the agent's name and the confirmation number.
Done when: The agent confirms which subscriptions are cancelled and when they end, and gives you a confirmation number.
- For billing questions about premium subscriptions billed by AOL Fulfillment Services, AOL lists 1-866-485-9217, Monday to Friday, 8 am to 1 am, and Saturday, 8 am to 10 pm Eastern Time. For Ad-Free AOL.com, AOL lists the same number for billing or cancellation requests.
- AOL lists 1-800-460-6244 for questions about its 2026 membership price changes.
Primary and additional usernames
An AOL account can have several usernames, but billing sits with the Primary username. AOL says only the Primary username can see the bill online. If you're charged for something you don't see, sign in with your other usernames or contact AOL.
When the Primary username cancels the paid account, the other usernames can't buy new subscriptions while the cancellation is pending. Cancelling the account doesn't stop premium subscriptions, so cancel each one too.
Ad-Free AOL Mail and Ad-Free AOL.com belong to the username that bought them, so check each username's subscriptions.
Free trial
AOL's plan pages, such as Complete by AOL, offer a 30-day free trial and say to cancel before it ends to avoid monthly charges. AOL's terms say it can limit you to one free trial.
The AOL Mail Plus page offers a 14-day free trial and also says to cancel before it ends to avoid monthly charges.
Trials started in the AOL app run through Apple or Google Play. Apple asks you to cancel at least 24 hours before a trial ends.
What AOL shows you before you leave
AOL's help pages say the confirmation page can suggest a lower-priced plan instead of cancelling. To leave, don't pick a new plan. AOL describes two paths with different labels, Continue to cancel then Cancel now, or Cancel My Billing then Cancel subscription. Keep going until you reach the final cancel button.
On some confirmation pages, Keep My Plan keeps the subscription.
- A lower-priced plan instead of cancelling: Skip it. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Cancel My Billing, then Cancel subscription.
What happens after you cancel
- Access: AOL bills a month in advance, so your paid plan keeps working until the end of the billing cycle. Then the account moves to free AOL.
- Your email: Your username, email and contacts stay on the free plan. AOL can delete accounts that stay inactive for a long time, so sign in now and then.
- Plan benefits: Benefits that come with your plan end with it, such as AOL 24x7 Live Support. Depending on the plan, that includes partner services such as LifeLock identity protection, McAfee Multi Access and LastPass Premium. AOL says LifeLock stays active only until the cancellation is complete. If you upgraded to LifeLock Ultimate Plus, AOL says that subscription stays active after you cancel your plan, so cancel it separately. AOL lists 1-800-827-6364 for billing questions. AOL VIP support may end too. Your MyBenefits page lists what your plan includes.
- Rejoining: AOL says you can't sign back up for the same plan once you leave it. Choose a current plan at aol.com/products, or contact AOL to reactivate paid services.
How to check it worked
- Look for AOL's cancellation confirmation email.
- Sign in to mysubscriptions.aol.com and check that no plan or premium subscription you meant to stop is still active.
- If you cancelled the whole paid account, your account status shows Pending Cancellation until the billing cycle ends.
- After your next billing date, open myaccount.aol.com and select Wallet, then My Bill, to check for new charges.
- If Apple or Google Play billed you, check that the subscription shows an end date there.
Getting a refund
- Billed by AOL: AOL's terms say charges are nonrefundable unless the product's own terms say otherwise. AOL can still collect charges from before your cancellation takes effect.
- AOL Mail Plus bought online: AOL offers one refund per customer if you ask within 14 days of your first monthly or annual purchase, or of an annual renewal. Ask AOL support at help.aol.com/contact.
- Billing errors: Report a wrong charge to AOL within 90 days of it first appearing on your statement. AOL's terms say you give up the right to dispute it after that.
- Billed by Apple: Request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com. Apple decides, not AOL.
- Billed by Google Play: Within 48 hours of a purchase, you may be able to request a refund on Google Play. After that, Google says to contact the developer, AOL.
If you were billed through the App Store, Apple decides eligibility case by case. Refund rules differ by country and by provider.
Questions people ask
Will I lose my AOL email if I cancel?
No. Cancelling a paid plan moves you to free AOL, and your email stays. AOL can still delete an account that stays inactive for a long time, so sign in now and then. Closing the account deletes your email.
I cancelled my AOL plan. Why am I still being charged?
Premium subscriptions bill separately, so check mysubscriptions.aol.com and cancel anything still active. A cancellation made less than 48 hours before the renewal date can also miss that renewal.
Can I cancel AOL by phone?
Yes. Call AOL Account Support at 1-800-827-6364, or sign in and use Chat Now at help.aol.com/contact if your account offers it.
How do I close my AOL account completely?
Cancel every paid plan and pay any balance first. AOL lets you close the account 90 days after that, at its account termination page. Each username closes separately, and you lose your email. Close additional usernames first: AOL closes the Primary username only 30 days after the others are closed. Signing in within 30 days of closing reactivates a US account.
AOL raised my price. Can I avoid the new price?
AOL introduced new membership pricing from June 25, 2026 and emails you 30 days before your next renewal. Cancel online or by phone at least 48 hours before that renewal date to avoid the charge.
How do I cancel AOL for a family member who died?
AOL has a separate process for US accounts that needs a copy of the death certificate. See AOL's help page for this. Without a death certificate, call AOL at 1-800-827-6364.
