How to cancel Match

Quick answer

  1. Sign in to Match and open Manage Subscription.
  2. Enter your password again.
  3. Go through every cancel step to the end.
  4. Open Subscription Status and check that renewal is off and an end date is shown.

You keep your paid features until the end date, but a cancelled free trial ends right away. Match generally doesn't refund unused time. If Apple or Google Play bills you, cancel with them instead.

Fee warning

Paying in 4 installments? Cancelling only stops the next renewal. Match's terms say any payments still left for your current plan stay due on the schedule you agreed to, unless the law where you live says otherwise.

First, find out who bills you

The device you use doesn't decide how you cancel. The company that charges you does.

Fastest check: Find the receipt from when you subscribed. A receipt from Apple or Google Play means they bill you. Otherwise Match does, and its Subscription Status page shows your plan, amount and renewal date.

Cancel on the Match website

Recommended

This turns off auto-renewal when Match bills you directly. It works on a computer or in your phone's browser.

  1. Sign in at match.com.
  2. Go straight to Manage Subscription. Or open Settings from the icon at the top right of the page (a gear or your profile icon), then select Manage Subscription.
  3. Enter your password.
  4. Go through every step of the cancel flow until it's finished.
  5. Select Subscription Status and check the End Date and Renewal Status.

Done when: Subscription Status shows that your subscription won't renew, and the date it ends.

  • Add-ons such as Private Mode and Expert Picks renew with your subscription and have their own Deactivate link on Subscription Status. Deactivating an add-on doesn't cancel the subscription, so check both.
  • Match says that if you cancel a Platinum subscription, you can't currently move down to Silver or Bronze instead.
  • Cancelling the subscription doesn't remove your profile. You stay on Match as a free member.

Cancel in the Match app

If Match bills you directly, you can also turn off renewal in the app on iPhone or Android.

  1. Open the Match app and tap the Profile icon.
  2. Tap the gear icon.
  3. Tap Manage Subscription. If you don't see it, tap Manage Account first.
  4. Enter your password.
  5. Go through every cancel step to the end, then tap Subscription Status to check your End Date and Renewal Status.

Done when: Subscription Status shows that your subscription won't renew, and the date it ends.

  • Turn off renewal under Manage Subscription before you delete the app or your account.
  • If Apple or Google Play bills you, use their steps below. Match can't turn off renewal for those subscriptions.

Billed by Apple

If you subscribed in the Match iPhone app and paid with your Apple Account, Apple manages the billing, so only Apple can stop the renewal.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open your Apple subscriptions.
  2. Tap Match.
  3. Tap Cancel Subscription.

Done when: Match in your Apple subscriptions shows an end date instead of a renewal date.

  • The same link works on a Mac, where it opens your subscriptions in the App Store.
  • No Cancel Subscription button means it's already cancelled.
  • Match can't turn off renewal or give refunds for subscriptions Apple bills.
  • Deleting the Match app or your Match account doesn't cancel the Apple subscription.
  • Match not in the list? Check the receipt email to see which Apple Account paid. If a family member's account paid, only they can cancel it.

Billed by Google Play

If you subscribed in the Match Android app and paid through Google Play, Google handles the cancellation.

  1. Open the Play Store and tap your profile icon.
  2. Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  3. Tap Match.
  4. Tap Cancel subscription.

Done when: Google Play shows the date the subscription ends.

Cancel within 3 business days (12 states)

Match's terms give subscribers in 12 states until midnight of the third business day after subscribing to cancel without penalty or obligation.

  1. Check that you live in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island or Wisconsin.
  2. Write a short notice saying that you, the buyer, are cancelling the agreement. Sign and date it.
  3. Add your name, the email address or phone number on your Match account, and the order number from your confirmation email.
  4. Mail or deliver it right away to Match, Attn: Cancellations, P.O. Box 25472, Dallas, Texas 75225, USA. The deadline in Match's terms is midnight of the third business day after you subscribed. Keep a copy and proof of mailing.
  5. Also turn off renewal at Manage Subscription, or with Apple or Google Play if they bill you.

Done when: Your signed notice is mailed or delivered, you kept a copy and proof of mailing, and your subscription shows renewal is off.

  • California and Ohio subscribers can also contact Match through its help center form or fax the notice to 1-972-892-9570. For the other states, Match's terms list only a mailed or delivered notice.
  • If Apple billed you, Apple handles the refund, not Match. Request it at reportaproblem.apple.com.
  • These are the rules as Match's terms state them. Consumer laws differ by state.

Pause instead of cancelling

Match's help center says it doesn't pause a subscription once a package is active. Match's terms make one exception: if you live in New York, you can put your subscription on hold for up to one year by mailing or delivering a written notice to Match Group Legal, P.O. Box 25472, Dallas, Texas 75225, USA.

If you only want a break, you can hide your profile from your visibility options, so it doesn't show up in search. Hiding changes who can see your profile. To stop the next charge, also turn off renewal at Manage Subscription.

Free trial

Match offers free trials from time to time, usually by email to free members. To redeem one, you pick a paid package and add a payment method, and that package starts when the trial ends unless you cancel first.

To avoid the charge, cancel at Manage Subscription before the trial ends: enter your password again and finish every step. Cancelling a trial ends your access right away, not at the end of the trial.

Changed your mind before the trial ends? You can turn it back on, which also restarts auto-renewal.

What happens after you cancel

  • Access: Your subscription features stay until the end date on Subscription Status, and add-ons stay until their own end dates. After that, your account goes back to a free membership.
  • Your profile: Your profile stays on Match as a free member. To close your membership too, go back to Manage Subscription and choose to cancel your membership: your profile and photos are hidden, and Match keeps your data under its Privacy Policy.
  • Deleting your account: In the app, tap your Profile, then the gear icon, Manage Account and Delete Account. On the website, select the profile icon at the top right, then Manage Account and Delete Account. Then choose Delete My Account. This removes your matches, messages and profile for good, and Match doesn't email a confirmation. Want a copy of your data? Request it first through Match's data request form: choose I have a Safety or Privacy concern, then I want to access my personal data. After an account is closed, the data may already be deleted or anonymized.
  • Rejoining: Before your end date, select Reactivate at the top of the site to turn renewal back on. You're charged at the next renewal, not right away. After the end date, buy a new subscription. If you closed your membership, sign in to reactivate it as a free member.

How to check it worked

  1. Open Subscription Status and check the Renewal Status and End Date.
  2. Check that each add-on you cancelled shows Reactivate instead of Deactivate.
  3. If Apple or Google Play bills you, check that their subscription list shows an end date for Match.
  4. Watch your statement after the end date for any new Match charge.

Getting a refund

  • Billed by Match: Match's terms say purchases are generally nonrefundable, with no refunds or credits for unused time, unless the law where you live says otherwise. Longer packages are charged in full up front, unless you chose 4 installment payments. Boosts, Super Likes and other one-time items are final.
  • In 12 states: Match's terms let subscribers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island and Wisconsin cancel without penalty until midnight of the third business day after they subscribed. If Apple bills you, request the refund from Apple. Otherwise, send the signed notice described under Cancel within 3 business days. Match's terms in these states also give a prorated refund if the subscriber dies, or becomes disabled and can't use Match. If you live in Illinois, New York, North Carolina or Ohio and move somewhere Match doesn't offer its services, Match's terms say you can write to Match Group Legal, P.O. Box 25472, Dallas, Texas 75225, USA, and Match will work with you on other services or a refund.
  • Billed by Apple: Request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com. Apple decides, not Match.
  • Billed by Google Play: Within 48 hours of a purchase, you may be able to request a refund on Google Play. After that, Google says to contact the developer, Match. You can ask Match through its help center form.

If you were billed through the App Store, Apple decides eligibility case by case. Refund rules differ by country and by provider.

Questions people ask

Can I cancel Match by phone?

No. Match says it doesn't offer phone support, and it warns that some websites list fake Match phone numbers. Cancel online, or use the help center form if you're stuck.

Does deleting my account or the app cancel my subscription?

Turn off renewal first, then delete. If Apple or Google Play bills you, Match's terms say deleting your Match account or the app doesn't stop their charges.

Will I get money back for the months I haven't used?

Generally no. A 3, 6 or 12-month package is charged in full when you buy it, unless you chose 4 installment payments. Match's terms don't refund unused time, except where the law where you live says otherwise.

Why did my renewal cost more than my first payment?

Match's promotional prices cover only your first subscription period. After that, your plan renews at its full price.

Does cancelling hide my profile?

No. Your profile stays on Match as a free member. Hide it, cancel your membership or delete your account if you want it gone.

I pay in installments. Do the payments stop when I cancel?

No. Cancelling turns off renewal, but Match's terms say the payments still left for your current plan stay due on schedule, unless the law requires otherwise.
