How to cancel The New York Times

Quick answer

  1. Go to nytimes.com/account/cancel and sign in.
  2. Follow the steps until The Times confirms the cancellation.
  3. If you also pay for The Athletic on its own, cancel it separately, at nytimes.com/athletic/settings if The Athletic bills you. Not sure? Your Subscription overview shows where to manage it.

A digital subscription keeps working until your billing period ends. With Home Delivery, or during a free trial The Times bills, digital access ends when you cancel. The Times doesn't refund unused time, except papers you prepaid for and haven't received. If Apple, Google Play or Barnes & Noble bills you, cancel with them instead.

First, find out who bills you

The device you read on doesn't decide how you cancel. The company that charges you does.

Fastest check: Sign in and open your Billing history. If your charges are listed there, The Times bills you. If they aren't, check nytimes.com/athletic/settings for a separate subscription to The Athletic, then Apple, Google Play and Barnes & Noble. No Subscription overview in your account at all means this account has no subscription, so try the email you subscribed with.

Cancel on the New York Times website

Recommended

This works for the digital subscriptions The Times bills you for, such as All Access, Games or Cooking. A separate subscription to The Athletic has its own steps below.

  1. Open nytimes.com/account/cancel and sign in with the email your subscription uses.
  2. Follow the instructions on the page until The Times confirms the cancellation.

Done when: The Times confirms the cancellation, and your Subscription overview shows when your access ends.

  • You can also start from your account: select Subscription Overview, then select Cancel your Subscription in the Manage Subscription section.
  • On a phone, open the same link in Safari or Chrome.
  • Home Delivery: only some print subscriptions can be cancelled online. If yours can't, call or chat with Customer Care.
  • Cancelling your Times subscription doesn't cancel a separate subscription to The Athletic.

Billed by Apple

If you subscribed in a New York Times app on an iPhone or iPad and paid with your Apple Account, Apple bills you and you cancel with Apple.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open your Apple subscriptions.
  2. Tap the New York Times subscription.
  3. Tap Cancel Subscription.

Done when: The New York Times subscription in your Apple subscriptions shows an end date instead of a renewal date.

  • The same link works on a Mac, where it opens your subscriptions in the App Store.
  • No Cancel Subscription button means it's already cancelled.
  • On a free trial, cancel at least 24 hours before it ends so it doesn't renew.
  • Subscribed in the Games, Cooking or The Athletic app? Look for that app's subscription in the list.
  • Audio subscriptions bought in the NYT Audio app on iPhone before October 3, 2025, or through Apple Podcasts, are billed by Apple too.
  • The Times can't cancel or refund an Apple subscription for you.

Billed by Google Play

If you subscribed in a New York Times app on Android and paid through Google Play, cancel it there.

  1. Open the Play Store and tap your profile icon.
  2. Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  3. Tap the New York Times subscription.
  4. Tap Cancel subscription.

Done when: Google Play shows the date the subscription ends.

  • On a computer, open play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions and sign in with the Google account that paid.
  • Uninstalling the app doesn't cancel the subscription.
  • The Times can't cancel or refund a Google Play subscription for you.

Billed by Barnes & Noble (NOOK)

If you read The Times on a NOOK through NOOK Newsstand, you subscribed with Barnes & Noble and you cancel with them.

  1. In a web browser, sign in to your account at barnesandnoble.com/account.
  2. Select Newsstand Subscriptions.
  3. Find The New York Times in the Newspapers section, select the gear icon on its cover, then select Unsubscribe.
  4. Confirm in the window that opens.

Done when: You've confirmed Unsubscribe in the window that opens.

  • You can't cancel on a NOOK device or in the NOOK app. A web browser on a phone works.
  • On a paid subscription, you keep getting issues until your subscription term ends. Barnes & Noble doesn't refund the rest.
  • On the 14-day free trial, cancel before the 14 days end and you won't be charged. Issues stop when you cancel.

Cancel by phone or chat

Use this for a Home Delivery subscription you can't cancel online, or if the website doesn't work for you.

  1. In the US, call Customer Care at 1-866-273-3612. To chat instead, open the Cancel Your Subscription help page and select Contact Customer Care at the bottom.
  2. Say: "I want to cancel my New York Times subscription. Please confirm the date it ends."
  3. Write down the date, the agent's name and any confirmation number.

Done when: The agent confirms the cancellation and the end date, and your Subscription overview shows it.

  • Phone lines open at 7 am Eastern Time every day and close earlier on weekends and holidays. The help page lists the current phone and chat hours.
  • Outside the US, use the international contact list.
  • Customer Care can't cancel a subscription that Apple or Google Play bills you for.
  • The Times says it can't answer account or subscription questions by mail, so don't send a letter.

Cancel The Athletic

A subscription to The Athletic on its own may be billed separately and must be cancelled separately. Your Subscription overview shows where to manage it. If The Athletic bills you, follow these steps. All Access already includes The Athletic, so if that's all you have, there's nothing extra to cancel.

  1. Open nytimes.com/athletic/settings and sign in.
  2. Select Cancel Subscription.
  3. Follow the instructions until the page confirms the cancellation.

Done when: The page confirms that your subscription to The Athletic is cancelled.

  • Upgraded from The Athletic to All Access? The Times says you still have to cancel the old subscription to The Athletic yourself.
  • If Apple or Google Play bills you for The Athletic, use those steps instead.
  • For help, contact The Athletic at nytimes.com/athletic/contact-support.

Family, bonus, gift and group subscriptions

Only the primary subscriber on an All Access Family or Games Family subscription can cancel it. When they cancel, everyone on the plan loses access once the subscription ends. To remove one person instead, the primary subscriber selects Revoke next to that person at nytimes.com/account/family-subscription.

Joining a Family subscription doesn't cancel a subscription you already pay for. Cancel your own one separately.

Bonus subscriptions that come with Home Delivery and some All Access plans last as long as the person who shared them stays subscribed, or until they revoke access.

A gift subscription is a one-time payment, and the person who received it isn't billed for the gift. If they chose to extend their access or signed up for an automatically renewing subscription, that paid subscription starts when the gift ends. To stop it, cancel at nytimes.com/account/cancel. Gift purchases aren't refundable.

Access through a school, library or employer is managed by that organization. There's nothing for you to cancel.

Pause Home Delivery instead of cancelling

Home Delivery subscribers can suspend the printed paper at nytimes.com/account/suspend-delivery. Select Add suspension, enter the stop and restart dates, choose what to do with your credit, then select Set suspension. The Times emails you a confirmation.

You may need to set it up as much as four days before it starts. You get a credit for the papers you don't receive. Because billing runs in advance, you may still see a charge for upcoming delivery, and the credit goes on your next invoice. Your All Access keeps working during the suspension.

The Times doesn't publish a pause option for digital subscriptions.

Free trial

Some offers start with a free trial. You give a payment method when you sign up, and the trial turns into a paid subscription unless you cancel before it ends. If The Times bills you and you cancel during the trial, access ends right away. If Apple bills you, cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends. If Barnes & Noble bills you, a first-time NOOK Newsstand subscription starts with a 14-day free trial. Cancel before the 14 days end and you won't be charged.

An introductory rate renews at the full price when it ends. To avoid the full price, cancel before the promotional period is over. You may not get another trial or introductory rate if you subscribe again later.

The New York Times app offers some new readers 30 days of access without a card. That access ends on its own and there's nothing to cancel. Buying a subscription during those 30 days starts billing straight away.

What The New York Times shows you before you leave

The Times doesn't publish what its cancel page or its Care Advocates offer.

If you're offered a lower price, check how long it lasts before you accept. The Terms of Sale say a promotional rate renews at the full rate when it ends.

To leave, keep following the cancel steps until The Times confirms the cancellation.

What happens after you cancel

  • Access: A digital subscription keeps working until the end of the period you already paid for. After that, you have a free account with limited access.
  • Home Delivery: On a monthly print and digital plan, you pay only for the papers you received, and digital access ends when you cancel. On a prepaid plan, such as quarterly or yearly, The Times refunds the unserved papers and digital access ends right away.
  • Your data: Your account stays open, with your saved articles, recipes and game stats, unless you delete it. To delete it, wait until your subscription has ended, then select Delete your account in the Privacy section of your account page.
  • Rejoining: Sign in and buy a new subscription at nytimes.com/subscription. You may not qualify for another trial or introductory rate.

How to check it worked

  1. Open your Subscription overview and check that it shows when your subscription ends.
  2. If you also paid for The Athletic on its own, check nytimes.com/athletic/settings as well.
  3. Look in your Apple subscriptions and on Google Play for another New York Times subscription.
  4. Check your next card statement. Many Times plans bill every four weeks, so a charge can arrive sooner than you expect.

Getting a refund

  • Billed by The Times: The Terms of Sale say charges aren't refundable and you keep access until the period ends. The Times can refund at its own discretion. Rules differ by state and country, so local law may give you more.
  • Home Delivery: If you prepaid for a quarter, a semester or a year, The Times refunds the papers you haven't received yet.
  • Promotions and commitments: Some plans sold as a promotion, with an annual commitment or as a Home Delivery add-on have their own cancellation and refund terms. Check the terms you were shown when you signed up.
  • Charged after you cancelled: The Terms of Sale say that if you cancel before your period ends, you won't be charged again or can get a refund of any extra charge. Contact Customer Care.
  • Billed by Apple: Request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com. Apple decides, not The New York Times.
  • Billed by Google Play: Within 48 hours of a purchase, you may be able to request a refund on Google Play. After that, Google says to contact the developer, The New York Times. The Times says it can't refund Google Play purchases itself.
  • Billed by Barnes & Noble: Barnes & Noble doesn't refund the rest of a paid NOOK Newsstand subscription. You keep getting issues until the term ends. If you cancel during the 14-day free trial, you aren't charged.

If you were billed through the App Store, Apple decides eligibility case by case. Refund rules differ by country and by provider.

Questions people ask

Does cancelling The New York Times also cancel The Athletic?

Not if you pay for The Athletic separately. Cancel it at nytimes.com/athletic/settings. If The Athletic comes with All Access, it ends with All Access.

Will I get money back for the rest of my billing period?

Usually not. You keep access until the period ends. The exception is prepaid Home Delivery, where The Times refunds the papers you haven't received.

Why was I charged twice in one month?

Many Times plans bill every four weeks, so two charges can fall in the same month. You may also have a second subscription on another email, which is billed separately. If you used Sign in with Apple, you may have a second Times account under an Apple private relay email address. Sign in to The Times with Apple, check that account's Subscription overview, and cancel any subscription on it. Also check your Apple subscriptions.

I only have Games or Cooking. Do I cancel the same way?

Yes, if The Times bills you: use nytimes.com/account/cancel. If you subscribed in the Games or Cooking app through Apple or Google Play, cancel there.

My price went up. Can I still cancel?

Yes. The Times tells subscribers by email or letter before a price increase, and you can cancel before the new price applies.

Can I cancel by mail?

No. The Times says it can't answer account or subscription questions by mail. Cancel online, by phone or by chat.
